Types of Septic Systems in Maine (What Do You Have?)

Not every yard in Penobscot County can run a plain gravity system. Here is how to tell which kind you actually have, and why.

Dave in Hampden bought his house two years ago. He knew it had “a septic system,” full stop. When his toilet backed up last spring and he called around for a pump-out quote, the first question every company asked stopped him cold: “Conventional, or do you have a pump chamber?” He had no idea. Neither do a lot of homeowners, and that is fine — until it is not, because the type of system you have changes what maintenance you need, how much a repair costs, and how often you should be calling someone.

Maine has five main septic system types you will run into: conventional gravity, chamber, pump and dose, mound, and holding tank. Which one sits under your yard usually comes down to your soil, your ledge, and how close your water table sits to the surface. Here is how to tell what you have and what it means for you.

Conventional Gravity Systems

This is the textbook setup: a septic tank, then a network of perforated pipe in a bed of gravel (the leach field, or drain field), all sloped just enough that wastewater flows downhill from tank to field by gravity alone. No pump, no electricity, no moving parts underground.

Conventional systems work where the soil is deep, well-drained, and there is enough elevation drop between the tank outlet and the field. A lot of older lots in Bangor, Brewer, and Old Town were built this way back when soil conditions cooperated and lots were bigger. If your system has no alarm box on the house, no control panel, and the field is roughly level with or below your tank, you probably have one of these.

Chamber Systems

Chamber systems are a variation on conventional, still gravity-fed, but instead of pipe buried in stone, wastewater flows into a row of open-bottom plastic chambers that look like arched tunnels. No stone needed, which saves on installation cost and gives the soil more surface area to absorb effluent.

Most systems installed in Maine in the last 20 years or so are chamber systems rather than old-school pipe-and-stone, simply because chambers are faster to install and often cheaper once you account for hauling gravel to a rural lot. From the surface, you cannot tell a chamber field from a conventional one — the giveaway is on your HHE-200 permit, which will specify “chamber” as the field type. Pump and Dose Systems

If your house sits lower than your leach field, or the field is far enough away that gravity alone will not push water evenly across it, you need a pump. A pump and dose system adds a pump chamber after the septic tank. A pump sends wastewater to the field in timed doses instead of a slow, constant trickle, which actually helps the field last longer by giving it rest periods between doses.

The tell here is easy: look for a green or gray control panel mounted on an outside wall, usually near the electrical panel, sometimes with a red alarm light on top. That alarm is there for a reason — if the pump fails, effluent backs up in the pump chamber and the alarm sounds before it becomes a backup in your house. Never ignore that light. It is not a suggestion.

Pump and dose adds one more moving part that a conventional system does not have, which means one more thing that can fail and one more thing your service tech should check at every visit.

Mound Systems

This is the one everyone notices, because you can see it. A mound system is a raised, grass-covered hump built with imported sand fill, usually a few feet tall and shaped like a long loaf. It exists because the natural soil underneath does not have enough depth or drainage to treat wastewater safely on its own, so the system builds an engineered soil layer above grade instead.

Mounds show up constantly around Maine lake country. Shoreland lots near camps in Old Town, Orono, and out toward Milford and Eddington often sit on thin soil over ledge, or have a water table that rises close to the surface in spring. State rules require a minimum separation between the bottom of the leach field and either ledge or the seasonal high water table — when a lot cannot meet that separation naturally, a mound is often the fix. Holding Tanks

A holding tank is not really a septic system at all — there is no leach field, no soil treatment, nothing that returns water to the ground. It is a sealed tank that collects everything and holds it until a truck comes to pump it out. No pipes running out into your yard, no absorption area to worry about.

You will mostly see these at seasonal camps where the lot genuinely cannot support any kind of leach field, or in cases where state or local rules simply will not allow a discharge system on that parcel. The tradeoff is pumping frequency: a holding tank needs to be emptied far more often than a septic tank, sometimes multiple times a season depending on household size and tank capacity, and every gallon costs you at the pump-out truck. How to Tell Which One You Have

You do not have to guess, and you should not just dig around the yard trying to find out — there is a much better way to locate your tank than a shovel and a hunch. Three faster methods:

Check your HHE-200 permit. Every legally installed system in Maine has one on file with your municipal plumbing inspector or the state. It lists tank size, field type, and design flow. If you bought the house recently, this is often sitting in your closing paperwork already.

Walk the property. A raised, mounded section of lawn means a mound. A control panel with an alarm light on an outside wall means a pump is involved somewhere. No panel and a flat yard usually means gravity-fed, conventional or chamber.

The core pump-out is similar across every type — a truck, a hose, and a technician who checks your baffles and measures scum and sludge layers while they are in there. What changes is everything around it. Pump and dose and mound systems need that pump chamber inspected, not just the tank, because a stuck float switch or a burned-out pump does not show up as a full tank, it shows up as sewage backing up into your house with the tank half-empty. Why Maine Soil Forces the Issue

Penobscot County is not uniform ground. You can have deep, sandy, well-drained soil on one side of town and a shelf of ledge eighteen inches down on the other. Add clay pockets that hold water like a bowl, a water table that spikes every spring thaw, and frost depth that complicates anything installed too shallow, and you get a patchwork where the “textbook” conventional system simply is not an option for a lot of lots.
