A septic tank is a living thing. It works because bacteria break down solids into liquid and sludge, and the liquid moves on to the drain field. Almost every item on the list of what not to put down a septic system causes trouble by doing one of two things: killing the bacteria, or refusing to break down and filling the tank faster than it should.
Neither one is dramatic on day one, and that’s exactly why they’re so easy to do for years without noticing, right up until a pump-out or a backup makes the bill come due.
Here’s the thing to hold onto before you read the list. Your tank has a fixed working volume, usually 1,000 to 1,500 gallons in a Maine home. Every wipe, every scoop of cat litter, every quart of bacon fat takes up room that used to belong to water, and water is what the tank needs to settle solids properly.
Fill enough of that space with things that never digest and the tank stops being a settling chamber. It becomes a pass-through, and whatever passes through lands in the drain field, which is the one part you cannot pump out and reset. A conventional field lasts roughly 20 to 30 years when it’s protected, a lot less when it isn’t, and once the soil seals up there’s no chemistry that reopens it.

The Hard Nos: Down the Toilet
- “Flushable” wipes. They are not flushable in any way that matters. Flushable only means the wipe clears the bowl, and it says nothing about whether the thing breaks apart afterward. It doesn’t. Wipes raft together into mats, and they’re the number-one clog we pull out of pumps and outlet lines. Nothing labeled a wipe belongs in a septic system, including the ones stamped septic safe.
- Paper towels, tissues, and napkins. Built to hold together when wet, which is the exact opposite of toilet paper. Toilet paper falls apart in seconds of agitation. A paper towel is designed to survive a spill. They go in the trash.
- Feminine hygiene products, cotton balls, Q-tips, dental floss. None of it breaks down and all of it accumulates. Floss is the sneaky one: thin enough to feel harmless, and it braids around pump impellers and float switches into a mat you have to cut off by hand.
- Cat litter, even the “flushable” kind. It’s clay. It turns to cement in a tank, it settles into a layer that a pump truck hose has to fight, and it does not decompose on any timeline that matters.
- Cigarette butts, condoms, diapers. Plastic and synthetic fiber that will sit in that tank essentially forever.
- Unused medications. Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria, which is the whole workforce your tank depends on. One flushed course won’t crater the system, but most Bangor-area pharmacies take back old prescriptions for free.
The test is simple. If it isn’t human waste or toilet paper, it doesn’t go in the bowl. A lidded trash can next to the toilet solves most of what we get called out for.
The Hard Nos: Down the Drain
- Cooking grease and fats. Poured warm, they behave like a liquid for about thirty seconds. Then they cool, congeal, and float into the scum layer at the top of the tank. Over years that layer thickens until it reaches the outlet, and grease starts riding out into the drain field, where it coats soil particles and seals off their ability to absorb. Wipe pans, jar the grease, trash it.
- Coffee grounds and eggshells. Neither digests. They drop to the bottom and add to the sludge layer, which means you hit your pumping trigger sooner. Grounds are the worst offender in a house that makes a pot a day.
- Paint, solvents, gasoline, thinners, and pesticides. These poison the bacteria outright, and they don’t stay put. A septic system is a groundwater discharge by design, so what goes down the drain can move toward a well or a lake. That’s a real concern in Penobscot County, where most homes and nearly every camp sit on both a private well and a private septic system. Maine’s rules on well and septic separation exist for this reason. Take chemicals to a hazardous waste day instead.
- Harsh, continuous cleaners. An occasional splash of bleach is fine. A load of laundry with bleach in it is fine. The volume is tiny compared to the thousand-plus gallons already sitting in the tank. What causes real harm is constant heavy use: drain cleaner every week, antibacterial everything, a bleach-based tablet sitting in the tank of every toilet. That keeps the bacteria population knocked back so the tank never fully does its job.
- Water, in quantity, all at once. Four loads of laundry back to back push a slug of water through the tank fast enough to stir up settled solids and carry them out the outlet. Spread laundry across the week.
The It Depends Category
- Garbage disposals. They roughly double the solids load reaching your tank, which means more frequent pumping, full stop. Not forbidden, but if you run one heavily, shorten your interval from every three to five years to closer to every two or three. - Water softener backwash. The research has genuinely gone back and forth here. A properly working modern softener discharging on demand is generally fine. A malfunctioning unit regenerating on a timer, dumping salt brine plus hundreds of extra gallons, is a different story and worth having checked.
- Septic “additives.” For a healthy system the monthly jug treatments are unnecessary. Normal household waste already seeds every bacterium a tank needs, and it does it for free. A few enzyme products are harmless. Some chemical “rejuvenators” do real harm by emulsifying the scum layer and pushing grease straight into the field. - Effluent filters. If your tank has an outlet filter, it’s catching the small stuff that would otherwise reach the field, which is also why filters plug. A filter that clogs every year is telling you something about what’s going down the drains. Here’s how filters and baffles work.
What Is Actually Fine
- Human waste and toilet paper, the two things the system was built for
- Normal amounts of ordinary soap, shampoo, and laundry or dish detergent
- Wastewater from sinks, tubs, and the washing machine
- Occasional bleach, in normal household quantities
- Food particles that rinse off a plate you already scraped into the trash
That’s the list, and it’s short on purpose. The whole philosophy is simple: if it isn’t body waste, toilet paper, or ordinary wash water, it belongs in the trash, not the tank.
You don’t need septic-specific detergent, septic-specific toilet paper, or a monthly product. The EPA’s guidance on septic care says the same thing in more words.
The Quiet Cost of Getting This Wrong
None of these mistakes announce themselves. Grease doesn’t clog the drain today. It glazes the drain field over three years until the soil stops absorbing, and then you’re looking at a field repair that runs many times the cost of a tank. Wipes don’t stop the toilet this week. They build until a pump seizes or a line packs solid.

People assume a pump-out is a hose and a bill. The useful part is the ten minutes before the hose goes in, because an open tank tells you exactly what a household has been putting down its drains.
First we locate and uncover the access lids. If your covers are buried, that’s the slow part of the visit, and it’s the main argument for risers if you’re pumping every few years anyway.
Then we measure the two layers that matter. Scum floats on top: grease, soap residue, anything lighter than water. Sludge sits on the bottom. When scum reaches the outlet baffle, or sludge climbs into the bottom third of the tank, that’s your pumping trigger no matter what the calendar says.
Next comes the visual read, and this is where the list you just read shows up in physical form. A mat of wipes is unmistakable. So is a grease cap thick enough to hold its shape. Between visits, there’s plenty you can watch without touching anything. Walk the drain field after a wet week and look for soggy ground, standing water in dry weather, or grass noticeably greener over the field. Any of those means effluent is surfacing instead of soaking in.
Listen at the fixtures, too. Gurgling drains and a toilet that bubbles when the washer empties are early signals. Note whether it’s one fixture or the whole house, because that’s most of the diagnosis. And keep a simple log: last pump-out date, tank size, people in the house, disposal or no.
Now the part where you stop. Do not open a septic tank lid, and never lean over or enter an open tank. The gases can incapacitate a person in seconds, lids are heavy, and concrete covers can be cracked underneath. There’s no reason for a homeowner to lift one.
Leave electrical work on pumps, float switches, and control panels to a pro as well, since a pump chamber combines standing water, sewage, and 240 volts. And don’t dig. Any excavation over a tank or field risks crushing a pipe or collapsing a lid. Probing to locate a tank is fine. Digging it up is not a Saturday project.
